SAT Essay Writing

  • The College Board implemented a 25 minute timed essay to the Standard Achievement Test a few years back. Given the potential for subjectivity, they have created detailed rubrics to guide scorers. I have designed this course by adapting my unique and systematic writing methods (see AboutWriteWell) to the College Board's precise guidelines.

  • In addition, I use sample questions provided by and modeled after College Board essay questions. Learning how to organize one's thoughts quickly, structure a thorough analysis, use appropriate evidence, and win a high score can seem a daunting task for a mere 25 minutes. In this course, I will lead students through this learning process gently, securely, and encouragingly, in ways that will increase confidence and, no doubt, help them face this portion of the SAT with greater ease.

  • What? SAT Essay Writing prepares you to take the standardized SAT essay section, which represents one-third of your total score for the SAT and has been timed at 25 minutes.

  • When? Starting in January 2007, this online course is available for rolling enrollment. Designed for a gently-paced six week course, families can adapt the time-table to meet their own needs. A motivated student could complete the course in as short as two weeks; one in less of a hurry can easily stretch it out to 12 weeks.

  • How much? Each course costs $100.

  • How to register? Click on the RegistrationForm link, print out, add relevant information, and mail with a check to the designated address.

  • What is the process? When your registration check and form is received, you will get a login email directing you how to access the private pages of the website and the SATEssayWriting class in particular. Background links establish the teaching tips, with weekly assignments specified. Students will write a total of six essays for the course, moving from untimed to timed recommendations which are adjustable to a student's readiness and comfort level. Unlimited extra assistance through email and unlimited opportunities for revisions welcome!

AS THIS IS A NEW COURSE, the website will be updated in stages for this course. [This course represents an expanded version of a one-day course previously offered.]

  • Where? From the privacy and convenience of your own home!
