Apprentice Level IV: Persuasive writing
Another model for the five paragraph essay will be taught in this class: the persuasive model.
- Students choose an issue of interest to them, one which can be debated.
- Students conduct minimal research to learn about their topic. Brainstorming all sides of the issue requires parent help, along with teacher assistance. Narrowing the topic to something managable for a five-paragraph essay remains essential.
- Each week, students write one paragraph, working from the inside, out, in developing a solid process for discussing all sides of an issue, while persuading the reader of their viewpoint.
- As with all analytical writing, students develop critical thinking skills along with writing skills.
- The essay-writing process, which I have developed, will be reinforced.
- In addition, students will expand their ability to explain and substantiate arguments with a variety of types of "evidence."
